Narrowing Your Topic
Narrowing your topic so that it is manageable is critical to a successful History Day project. National History Day recommends two strategies to help you narrow your topic:
- Look at subheadings listed under your general topic in encyclopedias, textbooks, and other background research materials.
- Note concepts and themes that are repeated in your background research sources.
Another visual approach to selecting your topic is presented in the illustration below. Think of it as a funnel. It should be easy decide on an "Interest" and the "Theme" is already known. Your background research will help you decide an a "General Topic" and "Narrow Topic."
Using Natioal History Day's recommended strategies will help you fill in the blanks in the topic selection funnel. The Topic Selection Worksheet at right will help guide you through the process.
